while living in paris from 1886 to 1888, vincent van gogh (dutch, 1853–1890) painted more than 20 self-portraits. lacking funds, he bought a mirror and used himself as a subject in order to pursue the art of figure painting without having to pay fees to a model. this tote features a framed detail from his iconic self-portrait with a straw hat (1887) in the met collection.
